I hope "Now and Then" re-enters the charts soon. I really love that song!

I think it deserves to be here more than some other songs.

Hot Take. I hate Murder On The Dancefloor with a burning passion. Sophie Ellis Baxters voice grinds on me in a bad way. The instrumental breakdown is really bad with the 'hey hey hey' bit making it sound like high school musical. The music video creeps me out as well. MF looking like a barbie doll. Just no!

And without further ado, time for my favourite (and only) 40 songs in the Top 40.

Don't laugh. I meant that joke.

IT'S THE ONLY SONG THAT'S COMPLETELY WORTH IT'S SALT TIER:

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten [18] (THE BEST. from 20 years back anyway)

THESE LOT ARE ALSO GREAT TIER:

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor [3]

Olivia Rodrigo - vampire [34] (I like it, but can it leave please? PLEASE!?)

Kanye West ft. Pusha T - Runaway [37]

Songer - Toxic [39]

Mason vs Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) [30]

COOL, COOL, PRETTY COOL TIER:

Mitski - My Love Mine All Mine [17]

Noah Kahan - Stick Season [1]

Drake ft. Sexxy Redd & SZA - Rich Baby Daddy [13]

Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer [8]

Noah Kahan ft. Hozier - Northern Attitude [32] (Fun Fact: Noah Kahan has had to rely on other people to get all of his hits. And that ain't changing next week.)

Dua Lipa - Houdini [9]

Drake - Practice [36]

ALRIGHT. SOMEWHAT. TIER:

21 Savage/Travis Scott/Metro Boomin - née-nah [23]

Tom Odell - Black Friday [31] (his album's out next week. I guess.)

Sonny Fodera/MK - Asking [21] (This needs to leave. STAT.)

JID ft. 21 Savage & Baby Tate - Surround Sound [40]

Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me [4]

Olivia Rodrigo - Can't Catch Me Now [26]

Tyla - Water [10]

HMMMMMMMM..... I DUNNO 'BOUT THIS TIER:

Flo Milli - Never Lose Me [24]

Tate McRae - greedy [7]

21 Savage - redrum [11]

Billy Gillies ft. Hannah Boleyn - DNA (Loving You) [15]

cassö/RAYE/D-Block Europe - Prada [6]

Zara Larsson & David Guetta - On My Love [22]

OK. THIS ISN'T DOING IT FOR ME TIER:

Ariana Grande - yes, and? [2]

Sabrina Carpenter - Feather [20] (Turns out supporting Swifty on that Eras tour must've paid off, huh)

Fred Again.. & baby keem - leavemealone [14]

Kenya Grace - Strangers [29]

D-Block Europe/Noizy - Eagle [19]

21 Savage/Doja Cat - n.h.i.e. [27]

Chris Brown - Angel Numbers / Ten Toes [35] (Turns out it isn't horrible)

SOMEONE EJECT THESE SONGS FROM THE TOP 40 ASAP TIER:

Tate McRae - exes [25]

The Weeknd/Playboi Carti/Madonna - Popular [12]

Zach Bryan & Kacey Musgraves - I Remember Everything [16]

Eliza Rose & Calvin Harris - Body Moving [38] (I hate this now. What went wrong here, Calvin?)

THE EIGHTH, NINTH, AND TENTH DEADLY SINS TIER:

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily Rose Depp - One Of The Girls [28] (I tried listening to it for once, and I gave up after 5 seconds.)

Teddy Swims - Lose Control [5] (I don't ever wanna hear this again.)

Paul Russell - Lil Boo Thang [33] (If you keep falling, I'll maybe rank you higher.)

Chart Review 19/01/24

Ah. That ain't grand, eh?

please don't dislike for that awful jok- ANYWAYS, THE CHART. Two words that, nowadays, is a euthanism for Anarchy. Chaos. Unpredictability. And a bunch of other words that are all over the place. Trying to guess who breaches the Top 40 so far this year has been near impossible, given everyone from Natasha Bedingfield to Liam Gallagher has dented the 40 in the TWO weeks that's passed. The third, however, is a lot more calm. And more tense.

All week long, it's been between two hotly-tipped efforts. With Sophie Ellis-Bextor sitting in the distance enjoying her bronze medal. On one end, Noah Kahan has casually sweeped the Spotify stakes and has attempted to draw over his opponent with a magic marker. On the other hand, we've had to endure the return of Ariana Grande for the first time since 2020, whom after having watched new single yes, and? get kicked off the streaming service top spot after ONE DAY, including being No.2 in the Monday midweeks, has done everything BUT throw the kitchen sink at this song. Acapella versions, radio edits, shorter versions, the lot, in an attempt to kickstart yet another assault on the music scene.

And it hasn't worked.

Salutations to Noah Kahan for propelling through, even though he'll probably be stuck there until, like, March. Stick Season makes it 3 weeks at the top, and given Sam Fender's hanging out on a new version of yet another tune he has, expect more dominance from Vermont's finest. Good on him.

But what about Ariana, you may ask? Well, yeah, no, this is a VERY disappointing return to music. Clearly she read the manual called 'SAMPLES FOR DUMMIES', which is never a good sign, given how AWFUL most songs with samples in it are nowadays. And it's no different here, no matter how hard she interpolates Madonna's Vogue in the song. It just grates my ears. Mark my words, Number 2 is NOT where she wanted it after it's first week. At the end of the day, though, this isn't Max Martin's finest work, and the fact it's fallen to 4 on today's Spotify update is not positive at all. Her album, eternal sunshine, comes out on the 8th of March, so if you were wondering when to plan Hibernation Day this year, you've got your answer. Good luck, Grande. You're gonna need it. The fact it's playlisted on Radio 2 says it all, really. (no offence to Radio 2)

What else has happened, err... TEDDY SWIMS WON'T GO AWAY. I'm already sick of Lose Control to the point where I could genuinely go over to the States and give him a right talking to. I'm serious.

As for the other 5 new entries (as well as Black Friday by Tom Odell returning because, erm, well, his album's out next Friday?), they all drive down an avenue know as DOES TRAP SOUND GOOD TO YOU? And it better, because the album chart is partly to blame for this. It only took 5 years, endless hits, and a grudge from music critics like me to rival even Baby Shark (shudders), but D-Block Europe have FINALLY topped the charts. The album charts, anyway, as Rolling Stone storms to the top sounding the same as they always do. It also spawns yet ANOTHER HIT, in the form of Eagle at 19. It's fine. And indistinguishable from the majority of their hits.

Their main opponent in the album stakes was 21 Savage, who by the looks of things has finally cracked the UK market, given his chart pedigree is a bit more scattered than most. In terms of lead artist credibility, he's only had 2 prior to this (I'm wisely skipping over Creepin' by Metro Boomin), so these three entries will surely be key to the (Brit/American/Whatever nationality he feels like representing)'s success of his work. Or whatever that bio rambles on about. redrum has actually managed to hang about the streaming services, meaning it won't immediately vanish from No.11 next week. He's also at 23 and 27, but those 'hits' aren't gonna last. Not even hiring Doja Cat for one of them will be enough. Trust me, I know 'deez tings'. :/

The only other new entrant in the 40 is hotly-tipped Alabaman 24 year-old rapper Flo Milli, who looks set to join the same class of hip-hoppers as Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat and Ice Spice with her debut effort, Never Lose Me. Even though I can't tell it apart from the other new hits this week. The fact that I'm 17 and should know these back-to-front is even more worrying. But you know, good luck to her. Her debut studio album is later this year, depsite the fact that this, and her previous mixtapes all have the word "" in it. Slightly concerning, but in a post-WAP world, it's easy to let it slide.

The rest of the Top 100 is hardly revolutionary either, given Wellerman-stalwart Nathan Evans was dangerously close to invading our consciousness again with Heather On The Hill, so the song only making it to 42 is a big relief. Especially for me, 'cause I LOATHE him. Ella Henderson is back as well, and given how poorly she's sampled Gangsta's Paradise, 46 is an apt position for her. Bring Me The Horizon somehow only slip to 45 (give them a medal), Liam & John aren't here at ALL, Lil Nas X's career is potentially in tatters, Marshmello & venbee are frauds, YG Marley is the latest Bob Marley offspring to gatecrash the charts, in the form of Praise Jah In The Moonlight at 63, balladeer borer Michael Marcagi appears at 73, and, umm. Yeah, no, that is it for the new hits. Expected anything else? Tough. The only other impact is made by D-Block Europe, and I've already talked about them enough today.

Next week sees Green Day stick out new album Saviors (home of No.42 on my Fab 50 of last year, The American Dream Is Killing Me), so they probably have that chart wrapped up. The singles sees new efforts from Noah Kahan (+ Sam Fender), Rita Ora (+ Keith Urban), Paloma Faith (+ Kojey Radical), and David Guetta (+ Izzy Bizu). But most importantly and noteworthy, Mumford & Sons have made a song with...

Pharrell Williams.

I think that's a good enough way of ending this review, don't you?

(P.S. This week at my college, I heard a TikTok of Sophie Ellis-Bextor that sounded like something at a country+western convention, circa 1852. Clearly, people love that version. There's also an AI-related effort to cover Stick Season from Homer Simpson that Radio 1 stuck on the chart show though, so the competition is clearly tough.)

machine girl have been having an insanely good few weeks for me as of late! their music is an absolute joyride, it’s weird and brings something new to the electronic scene.

gracie abrams and mitski are getting a LOT of support right now. the former is better than livrod and ill die on that hill.

Did you hear 'You're Gonna Go Far' may be re-released with Olivia Rodrigo?

Good week for rap albums with DBE and 21 Savage making a decent impact here. Definitely intrigued to check out more of the latter based on what charted from it today.

Glad ‘Surround Sound’ remained in the Top 40 too!

I wish ‘No Man’s Land’ debuted a bit higher this week. Venbee’s such an underrated artist and she definitely deserves a second hit!

If ‘I Remember Everything’ isn’t going to go Top 10, can we at least get ‘Popular’ there please? 😩

Shame ‘Redrum’ also missed but it gained a lot throughout the week which is good to see.

Shame Ari couldn’t debut at #1, but ‘yes, and?’ debuting in the runner-up position is still a fantastic return to the charts for her and I'm looking forward to the full album in March!

A bit disappointed that ‘Stick Season’ will likely be the song that Noah Kahan is going to be remembered for. It’s not even bad but most of his charting hits have been way better (and the collab with Sam Fender that dropped today will continue this trend next week).

yeah i agree

yes, and? should've been NO.1

and WHY STICK SEASON I HATE THAT SONG :(

Best chance for 'yes, and?' will probably be when the album impact happens in the middle of March (which will be before it's eligible for ACR).

'Stick Season' was fine for me at first but I'm quickly getting tired of it. :/

i was also hoping Sophie Ellis-bextor was going to get her 1st NO.1 :/

Definitely possible when 'Stick Season' is on ACR.

Would be her second. She got to no 1 with Groovejet in 2000 as a featured artist.

I don't think she was ever credited on it.
