i think that stick season song will be lingering for a bit because cd and 7” singles are dropping next week, and this is kinda saying a lot considering this would’ve spent the december at number 1 without the yearly christmas takeover. it’s also kinda nice to see an older drake song back (take care is a great album), feather enter the top 20 and songer in the top 40 at last. i’ve had my eyes on that guy since december 2022. lose control rising kinda though, and i can’t help but laugh at liam gallagher falling from grace to land 14 places below his expected first look position.

it’s been months since lewis capaldi had a charting hit, and nearly seven months since glastonbury, and i swore to never speak about him again following that pretentious album. but the screaming scot we all know (and apparently “love”) is back and after seven months, i can finally give my two cents.

lewis capaldi’s meltdown at glastonbury was unprofessional, uncalled for, and disrespectful to the fans who were in that pyramid stage crowd wanting to see him and instead they got someone who threw a tantrum and didn’t finish his set. i hope they never invite him back. that’s my two cents. have a great weekend.

Hello everyone hope you've all had a great week, I'll post a proper review here tonight since I'm currently at barrier for a Bring Me The Horizon gig, but here's a couple of quick thoughts. I'm so glad Murder On The Dancefloor reached it's chart peak again and I really hope that in the coming weeks it can get all the way to number 1, something that should have happened when it was initially released. I'm really surprised by how far Just Another Rainbow has fallen since the first look, and as a huge long time Bring Me The Horizon fan, tonight being my 2nd time seeing them live, I'm really happy with how highly Kool-Aid charted even though at the first look it was looking like being a lot higher, this is still a much higher placement then I expected on release. I hope everyone has a great night.

And here's how the songs line up in my personal opinion. There may be a little bias. Just a little bit.

PUT THIS ON MY TOMBSTONE TIER:

Bring Me The Horizon - KOOL-AID [21] (Yeah. I'm biased.)

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten [24] (I swear I'm living in a fantasy seeing songs like this back in the charts.)

Liam Gallagher & John Squire - Just Another Rainbow [16]

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor [2]

Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday Girls [32]

Kanye West ft. Pusha T - Runaway [31] (The radio edit is 5:47, actually. Not 6:30.)

Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me [3]

Tyla - Water [8]

Nicki Minaj ft. Lil Uzi Vert- Everybody [33]

Billy Gillies ft. Hannah Boleyn - DNA (Loving You) [10]

JID ft. 21 Savage & Baby Tate - Surround Sound [35]

Kenya Grace - Strangers [23]

The Weeknd/ Carti/Madonna - Popular [11]

Eliza Rose & Calvin Harris - Body Moving [34]

Tate McRae - exes [22] (just making up the numbers at this point)

YIKES... PUT SOME MORE EFFORT IN TIER:

Zach Bryan ft. Kacey Musgraves - I Remember Everything [14]

Chris Brown - Angel Numbers / Ten Toes [38] (It's not THAT bad. I just haven't heard it. Like, at all.)

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily Rose Depp - One Of The Girls [25] (I got it right this time)

Lewis Capaldi - Strangers [37]

I WOULDN'T TOUCH THESE WITH A TEN-FOOT POLE TIER:

Teddy Swims - Lose Control [6] (Lord help me if it makes it to No.1)

Paul Russell - Lil Boo Thang [28] (can you keep falling down the chart please? thx)

Chart Review 12/01/24

Ariana Grande's new song .

In other news, welcome to the bit of the week where I moan for a while. After last week's kerfuffle which reshaped the Christmas hits into, well, NORMAL hits, this week officially starts a normality check, where we can all go back to charading the same few artists every week. Because fanbases are toxic like that, you see. Given my personal opinions about Ms. Grande's new tune, it probably tells you a little about what it takes to make me smile, but enough about next week's chart, here's this week's! Great, isn't it? Shame MusicWeek's website spoiled it.

Anyways, 6 new hits (+1 old track) make up the perimeters this time around, but it doesn't take a team of researchers to identify the outcome of the No.1 spot, as Noah "Daddy" Kahan (he got that nickname becuase of Hozier, apparently) sets up a deckchair and relaxes solemnly, safe in the knowledge that his days being at the summit with Stick Season are severely numbered. Not that he doesn't stand a chance next week, but it feels slightly scripted. I'm also slightly peeved by the way Radio 1 updated the chart music without me knowing about it. This is why no one above the age of 30 knows about Fred Again.., BBC. The least you could do is play all the records like you used to. I know Chris Brown and Kanye West's tracks go on for like, 7 years, but at least people get to hear them. Even a little snippet of the song is OK by me, but no. You just HAVE to leave us guessing, don't you.

Rant over now. In other news, The Saltburn euphoria is clearly not going away, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor is front and centre of the coverage. Murder On The Dancefloor is inescapable at the moment. Radio 1, 2, Heart, Magic, Capital, probably even Kerrang! has stuck it on at one point. Combined with the fact that the Spotify popularity is clearly not letting up, and you now have a massive No.2 supernova of a tune. That was actually released back during the days when PPK, Sum 41 and Geri Halliwell were having hits. Go figure. Perfect (Exceeder), meanwhile, rises to 26, proud of the fact that it came out when dance music was GOOD. And not feeling the wrath of Ella Henderson every other month.

Elsewhere, and no matter how disappointing yes, and? is, it can't be any worse than what Teddy Swims is flogging at the moment. Already one of the candidates for the most mind-numbing sound of 2024, clearly I am in a very small minority, given Lose Control has now swiped into the Top 10 against our wills. Look, do you want me to keep complaining about the Georgian Rag'N'Bone Man, or do you want to me to talk about the GOOD stuff.

That's what I thought. :\

Now not to be that guy or anything, but Saltburn isn't the only massive film out at the moment. Anyone But You has been doing bits despite its Shakespeare origins (just ignore the mid reviews), and it just happens to have Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield on it. Another former 00's star, Natasha, brother of Daniel Bedingfield, was white-hot during the decade, with hits like Single, Soulmate and I Wanna Have Your Babies. She also managed to top the UK Charts in 2004 with These Words. But this exposure for her big American smash, Unwritten (reached No.5 in the states and No. 6 over here), seems to have done BITS. Spotify love it, TikTok love it, and now the Top 40 has to love it as well. Unwritten re-enters at 24 and all is right with the world. Even though she hasn't had a hit since 2008. But that's not important right now.

Also, The Weeknd is back. F*** him. Please retire, for everyone's sakes. I don't care why Popular is back. I just want it gone.

Album chart-toppers this week are Shed Seven, the former Britpop punching bags who by the looks of things, have clearly taken advantage of the January lull. 10,000 folks or so are responsible for their first chart-topping album. 30 YEARS AFTER THEIR DEBUT. Obviously, such a wait for a No.1 album is a UK Chart record, but that kinda highlights how dreary January is. If they can do it, anyone can. I do like Let's Go from this album, but they haven't had any hits since 2003. And that ain't gonna change.

Now for the actual new stuff. It may have escaped your attention that Liam Gallagher's felt like making a collab album with John Squire from The Stone Roses, which is heaven for Mancunians, but misery for everyone else. Just Another Rainbow is the first song from said album, out later in 2024, and it sounds like...

what do you think it sounds like |:(

I like it though, but that's because I'm FROM Manchester, meaning liking this stuff is on my contract. Fun fact though, 16 is Liam Gallagher's best ever solo performance, although that may have something to do with releasing a 7-inch to coincide with the song's release. It was top on Sunday, but has ended up way lower. Clearly it didn't go to plan. Naturally, it's gonna tumble next week, and some of the lyrics in this one are proof that Mr. Squire was never the best songwriter (does reciting the colours of the rainbow sound fascinating to you?), but it works. Roll on the album.

Elsewhere, Sabrina Carpenter rises to 19, meaning she finally has a hit on her hands. Maybe I can let go of the Tate McRae comparisons. Eliza Rose crawls up to 34, letting us all spend another week hoping it doesn't disappear. Apart from me, because it's kinda average. And Drake has YET. ANOTHER. HIT. Thankfully, it's alright, as 2011 album track Practice has come to prominence thanks to.. erm.. D'you know what? I don't really know. I tried to get answers, but instead I got sent to some website about "Drake Tax" from DrakeSoftware.com. So clearly it's a TikTok thing then.

In other news, Nicki Minaj now has 3 hits on her hands from Pink Friday 2, as FTCU sneaks in at 40, whilst Lewis Capaldi can at least get some excitement from new album track Strangers entering at 37. Even though it would've been just as bad of a song if it was a single. Because I have a grudge against him. Meanwhile at 39 we have London rapper Songer, suddenly putting most British wordsmiths to shame with his debut chart hit, which is literally just Britney Spears' Toxic, but with him yamming over the instrumental. And it rules. You should listen to it. One of the rare examples where a modern sample actually WORKS. David Guetta could learn a thing or two from this man.

As for the last new hit, there's certain types of artists that revel in making songs virtually unlistenable unless you've got a PhD in music. Mogwai. The Fall. my valentine. Anything from Radiohead, from 1997 onwards. And similarly, it's been 20 years since some Sheffield kids got together and started to bend the rules of what makes a "Top 40 single". No, not Arctic Monkeys, you fool. Bring Me The Horizon, a band who've been releasing albums since 2006, but have only been chart wannabes since, like, 2020. 5 of their previous 6 Top 40 singles have come this decade, and you can make it 7 as KOOL-AID flies in at 21, making it their biggest hit since Drown in 2014. It says a lot about how noisy and riotous their hits seem to be nowadays that KOOL-AID is their first new hit to get skipped by Radio 1 on the Top 40. Even though I'm pretty sure the likes of OBEY and DArkSide would've been more apt. Normally, such a response would mean the song . What you don't know is that I'm 17, meaning that I can listen to this stuff on Spotify, and not have my mum clattering down the stairs and telling me to TURN THAT BLEEDIN' RACKET OFF!! I just wish they'd release an album, 'cause it's been 4 years since their last musical project and it's been pushed back so much that it's criminal. Release an album you cowards. (by the way, Arctic Monkeys formed in 2002. I just wanted to be funny, that's all)

What else is in the Top 100, erm.., Flo Milli sits outside at 41, parading a sign with the words 'I AM A FEMALE RAPPER FROM AMERICA' on it, TikTok has powered 2016 album track Ophelia from The Lumineers up to 52, D-Block Europe won't leave (they have an album out now), BBC Sound of 2024 winners The Last Dinner Party crash in at 71 with Nothing Matters (I prefer My Lady Of Mercy, in fairness), Lost Frequencies return to nobody's excitement, a smile creeps onto my face as O-Rod's all-american b**** jumps back to 98, and Nathan Evans has finally remembered to follow up 2021's Wellerman. Even though he's at 87. And it's just as bad as that hit. Maybe he was meant to be a musician.

As for next week, well I don't what can happen at this point. Who could do well next week? Lil Nas X? D-Block Europe? Ella Henderson? Jamie ? Some random album track from Nine Inch Nails? Who knows!? Who cares!? Ariana Grande will probably be No.1 though. And I'll probably look like this by the time we make it to 2025.

🫠

G'day.

(P.S. I have to apologise about The Weeknd's latest flog. It's not One Of YOUR Girls, it's One Of THE Girls. This is what happen when you rush this out for some sort of response. And I doubt my words will ring a positive bell this week either.)

Fantastic seeing ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ jump into the runner-up position and matching its all-time peak 23 years later. Honestly, if this makes it to #1 even for just a week, then one of the chart highlights of 2024 will have come early! ❤️

Good to see ‘Perfect (Exceeder)’ with a big climb following the Saltburn hype too! Glad that such an addictive and iconic club anthem like this is also getting a second chart run in the UK. :)

I love how OCC said in the First Look article that ‘Just Another Rainbow’ could become Liam’s first solo UK #1 single. It didn’t even make the Top 15 in the final chart and isn’t even a solo hit to begin with if John Squire is credited! 😭

Hopefully Ariana’s new single has a shot at the top spot next week. It might even be one of the best songs she’s released this decade.

I can't remember ever seeing a song fall that low after being #1 on a First Look! 😩
